Oyo State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Barr. Seun Ashamu has clarified the benefit of the newly signed Electricity Bill in the state.
Ashamu while feeding questions in a live radio station program in Ibadan said the bill is designed to independently generate, transmit and distribute electricity to the people of Oyo State.
Speaking further on the electricity bill,
“the bill will unbundle the present DISCOS and allow each state to have its Disco that will be efficiently delivered to the people of the state.”
“As we know, the power shareholding of Nigeria is 40% during the privatization process. And with that, each State will take its commensurate shareholding and make investors invest and give their maximum best.”
On how the government can make electricity work in Nigeria, two things are involved according to the commissioner, cast iron contract and liquidity availability. Also, sufficient meters imply that each house must have a meter for proper metering.
Corroborating his statement, Ashamu explained that the Electricity Bill will help the state to stand on its own in generating, transmitting and distributing electricity and ensure energy security.
“As we speak, our government has been able to build 25 mini-grids serving the people of Oyo State. The served community are paying for the uninterrupted services they’re enjoying. Electricity is utility and there is a need to pay for services rendered.”
“With the bill, we will be able to expand through major power stations we are about to commission soon.”
Ashamu added that the government has commenced electricity enlightenment to teach people about energy management.
“Major companies are applying to generate lots of megawatts within the state to ease the generation power of Oyo State.”
